On 2 October 2013 the Stichting Werelderfgoed.nl organized a meeting with the Belgian and Dutch World Heritage sites and those sites on the Tentative Lists in the Van Nelle Ontwerpfabriek, Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The central issue was ‘World Heritage and management’.
Nanette van Goor, program manager World Heritage site 'Stelling van Amsterdam, welcomed the participants. The managing director of the Van Nelle Ontwerpfabriek, Roger Meertens, talked about this special location, which is on the tentative list of UNESCO and will be discussed by the World Heritage Committee during its meeting in June 2014.
The first speaker Sam Rose, World Heritage site manager of the Jurassic Coast (England), had an inspiring presentation about his management experiences in England. The central theme was “the act of coordinating the efforts of people to accomplish desired goals and objectives using available resources”. The importance of the formal and informal partnerships became clear. Sam finished the presentation with the Top 10 of ‘management issues’.
Joris Nauwelaerts, ir-architect from the city Brugge, explained the (management) issues of Brugge, also a World Heritage site. His presentation can also be found on this webpage.
Finally, Piet Geleyns (RWO Vlaanderen) explained the State of Conservation (SoC) issues and communication with the World Heritage Centre and ICOMOS.
There was a lively discussion after the presentations. This, together with the thought provoking presentations, resulted in an inspiring meeting!
