The pumping station stands at the end of the 4-kilometre long Stroomkanaal, a watercourse that was dug in 1915. The pumping station is connected with the Friesland Boezem via the Stroomkanaal and Groote Brekken Lake. The water is discharged towards the IJsselmeer; the mouth of the watercourse is protected to the west by a slightly curved abutment pier.

A buffer zone is observed around the World Heritage pumping station. This buffer zone includes, among other things, a part of the Stroomkanaal and the abutment. The buffer zone also includes an undeveloped area along the eastern side of the watercourse and the so-called Teroelster Kolk, a pool on the landside of the dyke that resulted from a breached dyke.
