The Ir. D.F. Woudagemaal (D.F. Wouda Pumping Station)

1998, The Ir. D.F. Woudagemaal (D.F. Wouda Pumping Station)
(The Municipality of Lemsterland, near Lemmer, Province of Friesland)
The Ir. D.F. Woudagemaal was opened by Queen Wilhelmina in 1920. It is the largest steam-driven pumping station ever built and it still operates today. The pumping station is the epitome of the contribution of Dutch technicians and architects towards the protection of the Netherlands and the Dutch against the natural forces of water.

Motivation
The World Heritage Committee decided to inscribe the D.F. Woudagemaal on the World Heritage List by virtue of criteria (1), (2) and (4).
(1): The rise of steam as a source of power gave the Dutch engineers a powerful instrument in their centuries-old water management task and the D.F. Woudagemaal is the largest installation of its type ever built.
(2): The Woudagemaal symbolises the height of Dutch hydraulic engineering, which served as a model for centuries and was the standard across the world.
(4): The Woudagemaal bears unique witness to the power of steam for controlling forces of nature, in particular in how it was applied by Dutch engineers.
