Setting
Schokland is a narrow, elongated ridge of land situated in the southern part of the Noordoostpolder between the present towns of Emmeloord, Nagele and Ens. The north-south orientation of the former island is enclosed by a ring of drainage ditches or a hydrological zone, keeping the groundwater at a higher level than in the surrounding polder. This World Heritage site, which also includes a more or less rectangular part of the neighbouring Noordoostpolder, has a surface area of 1,307 hectares.
Schokland is easy to reach via the A6 motorway and the N50.
Visitors can enjoy a stroll on newly constructed and old dykes.
