News Rietveld Schröder House
The Centraal Museum in Utrecht manages two other Rietveld houses, namely at Erasmuslaan 5 and 9. Both stand on the other side of the eastern ring road, just a short distance from the Rietveld Schröder House. These houses contrast significantly with the Rietveld Schröder House: no colours have been applied at all. Rietveld opted for minimal materials: white stucco walls, steel casings and a great deal of glass, thus meeting the aesthetic ideal of the Modern Movement, the modern functionalistic architectural movement of the 1930s. The Centraal Museum furnished number 9 as Rietveld had furnished it in 1931 when it was open to the public for three weeks as a show house.
