2000, Rietveld Schröder House
(The Municipality of Utrecht, Province of Utrecht)
Mrs Truus Schröder, a young widow, commissioned architect Gerrit Thomas Rietveld to build the house. The Rietveld Schröder House was constructed in 1924-1925. The small family house, including the interior with its flexible spatial layout and visual qualities also with respect to form, manifests the principles of the group of artists of the ‘De Stijl' movement. ‘De Stijl’ was highly significant during the 1920s and is considered the icon of the Modern Movement.
Motivation
The World Heritage Committee decided to inscribe the Rietveld Schröder House on the World Heritage List by virtue of criteria (1) and (2).
(1): The Rietveld Schröder House is an icon of the Modern Movement and is a unique expression of human creative genius in its purity of ideas and concepts as developed by the ‘De Stijl’ movement.
(2): With its radical approach to design and use of space, the Rietveld Schröder House occupies a seminal position in the development of contemporary architecture.
