Rijksdienst voor het Oudheidkundig Bodemonderzoek (Dutch National Service for Archaeological Heritage)

The Dutch National Service for Archaeological Heritage (ROB) is responsible for producing the National Tentative List of Archaeological Heritage and any possible ensuing nominations. The current Tentative List of Archaeological Heritage was drawn up and submitted to the World Heritage Centre in 1994.

Policy regarding world heritage sites in the Netherlands is formulated by the relevant Ministry, which to date has effectively been the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW), to which the ROB belongs.
The Tentative List and the nominations are produced upon consultation between the ROB and the relevant authorities, such as municipalities, provinces and district water boards, and with private parties and organisations. Furthermore, nominations require a cabinet decision.

The Tentative List is a relatively simple document containing such matters as particulars on the location and a description of the site. Nominations can be files comprising dozens of pages, accompanied by appendices. In addition to the precise location, a map and photographs, they mainly contain detailed descriptions and a history of the site concerned. Nominations also provide data concerning the legal status and protective measures, as well as information pertaining to the condition of and possible threats to the site, etc. The files drawn up by the ROB are submitted to the World Heritage Centre in Paris after being signed by the proper administrator of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. To date, one file has been compiled on archaeological heritage and forwarded to Paris.
