In the year 2000 the World Heritage Committee decided to include the Rietveld Schröder House on the World Heritage List by virtue of cultural criteria (1) and (2). Briefly stated, according to these criteria cultural world heritage must at least : (1) Be a masterpiece of human creative genius and (2): Mark an important transition in the development of technology, architecture, town-planning or landscape design.
The following considerations applied when the Rietveld Schröder House was inscribed on the List:
(1): The Rietveld Schröder House is an icon of the ‘Modern Movement’ in architecture and is a unique expression of innovative creative ability in purity of ideas and concepts as developed by the ‘De Stijl’ movement.
(2): With its radical approach to design and use of space the Rietveld Schröder House is considered to be the beginning of the development of contemporary architecture.
